Empty columns in FreeCell

An empty column is not simply another place to park a card. It is the engine behind FreeCell's largest reorganisations.

Space increases movement

The number of cards you can move depends on open cells and empty columns. Preserving both keeps the tableau flexible.

Have an exit plan

Before placing a run in an empty column, know which destination will let you empty it again.

Do not chase emptiness at any cost

A costly column clear can be worse than waiting if it buries low cards or fills every cell.

Keep in mind

  • Count your open cells.
  • Know how the run leaves.
  • Protect at least one workspace.
