Solitaire rules
Every variant has its own rhythm. These short introductions explain the goal, the legal moves and the detail most likely to catch you out.
Klondike Draw One
Build down in alternating colours and build foundations up by suit. Draw one card at a time from the stock.
Spider Solitaire
Build down by rank. Only same-suit runs move together; a complete same-suit run from king to ace leaves the board.
FreeCell
Build down in alternating colours, use four free cells as temporary storage and build foundations up by suit.
Pyramid Solitaire
Remove exposed pairs totalling 13. Kings are worth 13 and leave on their own. You may pass through the stock three times.
Forty Thieves
Build tableau columns down in the same suit, one card at a time. Foundations build up by suit from ace to king.
Yukon Solitaire
Build down in alternating colours. You may move any face-up card with all cards below it, even when the tail is unordered.
Bjørnar Solitaire
Build down in alternating colours and move open tails while working all cards towards the foundations.
Scorpion Solitaire
Build down in the same suit. Any face-up tail may move, and empty columns accept kings or king-led tails.
Canfield Solitaire
Build foundations up by suit from the base rank, wrapping king to ace. Build tableau down in alternating colours.
Aces Up
When two exposed cards share a suit, discard the lower one. Empty spaces may be filled with an exposed card.
Monte Carlo Solitaire
Remove equal-ranked cards that touch horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Compact and refill only when no pair remains.
Golf Solitaire
Play exposed tableau cards one rank above or below the waste. Clear all tableau cards before the stock is gone.
Calculation Solitaire
Start foundations with ace, 2, 3 and 4. Build by +1, +2, +3 and +4, wrapping after king. Every exposed stock card must go to a foundation or one of four waste piles.
